Why You Should Work On Your LinkedIn Profile

Why You Should Work On Your LinkedIn Profile Today I had a one hour consultation with an executive on his LinkedIn Profile. This is not my $49 profile critique  (where I record my critique and send you a link to watch) this is a $100 one-on-one, about an hour consultation. (if you buy one of these, please put what you are buying in the description!) There was something I meant to mention to this executive, but I forgot.  Ill share that with you right now. During the consultation, I got a feeling of being overwhelmed with everything that he had to do.  While his Profile was pretty good, there was plenty of room for improvement.  I suggested he do a little here, a little there, but not even attempt to do it all in one day or week.  This was the other thing I was going to tell him: The process of enhancing your Profile will better prepare you for networking conversations and interviews.  It will help you have a better website, resume, and cover letters. Why? Critically thinking through the things he need to go through would take him to a place that he needed to go to have better marketing communication (written, like a resume, and verbal, like an interview or a network meeting).  This process would bring clarity on what parts of your history become the parts you bring out, as your brand. You could wing it, like many people do, but going through this process should benefit you in your future communications. And what you gain from that, I think, is more valuable than the hour we spent on the phone together. Note: I am not opposed to hiring a professional to write your Profile for you.  I do feel strongly that if you go through the process, even perhaps with the professional writer (many times they do it with you, or they give you forms to fill out), youll be better for it. If you want to get better at LinkedIn, you could buy my LinkedIn course for $50, or you could watch two courses I created on Pluralsight for free.  The courses are: LinkedIn Strategy: Optimize Your Profile LinkedIn: Proactive Strategies Heres how you access these courses, for free (and get JibberJobber upgrade credit for every Jason Alba course you watch): Why You Should Work On Your LinkedIn Profile Today I had a one hour consultation with an executive on his LinkedIn Profile. Gen Y Career Tips So You Want to Get Promoted

Gen Y Career Tips So You Want to Get Promoted In my first four years out of college, I quickly  was promoted  at the very first company that I worked at.   I know you may not love your job and you may not be doing what you always  wanted to do.   But, there a few things you can do to quickly get promoted to that job that you really want!    Some people might advise you to schmooze with the President of your company  or become your boss favorite person,  but I suggest other  more ethical ways.   Here are the five things that if you do, you will see yourself quickly rising the ranks in the corporate world. Become an expert  that your boss couldnt function without.    Even if you dont love your job, do great at it and prove that you can quickly learn and pick up new things.   If you do this, your manager will quickly see that  he or she  needs to give you  something  more exciting and challenging!    Your boss  may also give you that introduction or recommendation to get into the part of the company that you really want to be in. Get to know as many people as possible in your company.   This will  give you a network that you can  ask for help when you need it and it will help you learn more about exactly  what you want to do.   They will be able to make introductions for you in the future. Volunteer.   My company has many extracurricular things you dont get paid for but look good on your assessment.    By volunteering for extra tasks, you go above and beyond and  people will know  that they can count on you.   You will show that you can prioritize and manage many responsibilities. Get there early and stay late, even when you arent asked.   Show your commitment and  importance to your team.   Dont ever leave your teammates if they still have work to do.   Show you are a team player who always wants to help others. Dont complain or quit if things are unfair.   If more  tasks get placed on you without a salary raise, think of it as a great opportunity to show your leadership and task management skills.   This happened to me and it didnt make me happy, but I never once complained about it.   My management noticed my patience  and when the time was right, they promoted me. If you are in a pretty tough job right now, remember this quote, That which doesnt kill us makes us stronger.   Know that you wont be doing this job forever and you are only at a stepping block for that next great opportunity that is about to knock on your door.   Good luck! Messy Brilliance - A Journey Into Knowing Yourself

Messy Brilliance - A Journey Into Knowing Yourself So, youve spent the last five or ten or twenty years on a quest.   That quest may have been for Success Wealth Educational Achievement. Has your quest brought you to your desired destination?   How much happiness have you gained or sacrificed along the way? Is that destination even what you, the real you, truly want?   As Kelly McNelis says in her new book Your Messy Brilliance, All too often, many of us end up settling for a life that we arent in love with, or even worse, shrinking into joyless roles that dont fulfill us at all Even if youve tried coaches or mentors, counselors or yoga, part of the challenge to knowing yourself is that theres so much noise out there.   Distractions of life in the day, and a million self-proclaimed gurus touting miracle cures at night.   What if you already have all the answers, right there within yourself, to bring yourself to a level of joy   and self-acceptance that youve never known but always pursued? Inspired by Kellys book, here are three ways to start   on a journey towards knowing yourself in ways you probably never have. Curiosity Of all of the unique attributes of humanity, the ability to question is perhaps the most empowering.   Interestingly, we almost always limit our questioning to whats going on out there.   But heres a clue:   you dont live out there.   All of the essence of who you are resides inside the shell of your body.   In some magical combination of your mind, your heart, and what we try to conceptualize as your soul, there is you. When did you last get curious about yourself?   When did you last ask yourself questions that matter, really matter, to you?   You can start on that journey of knowing yourself by asking some of the questions posed by Ms. McNelis: Who am I? What are the many identities Ive accumulated? What are the qualities that make me who I am? And what would it look like for me to embrace all of me? via Self Magazine Awareness We each own a huge library.   Mine is called Linda Allen.   It contains all the versions of me that ever were and ever could be.   It contains all my stories.   Once I am aware of all those stories and versions that are on the shelf, I can begin to examine which ones serve me, and which ones either hold me captive or lead me away from the me I truly want to be, deserve to be.    Kelly frames it this way:   What kinds of stories about me would allow me to be the fullest version of myself, if I choose to dive into them? You might liken it to choosing the role youre about to play in magnificent production.   Of all volumes in your library, you get to choose. Acceptance Close your eyes and take another look at the library of you.   Are all the books orderly, maybe a bit dusty and never off the shelf?   Or are some well-worn while others seem to be beckoning you to open the cover and engage them? Chances are, your library is a bit of a mess.   Some volumes might be stuck in the shelf with bookmarks to remind you that you havent finished that story.   Others might be out of order because theyre favorites, your go-to sources.   All of that messiness is perfectly okay.   And thats the core message of Kelly McNeliss book. Youve also got volumes on the shelf that perhaps arent ones youre proud to share.   But they represent a part of your collection, your history, and they are what makes you, you.    The library of you is just fine.   Its up to you which stories you want to embrace. Your Messy Brilliance As the editor of Ms Career Girl, I receive many requests to review new books.   I try to choose those that sound interesting and of value to the Ms Career Girl readers.   But truth is a few of them are disappointing, and I wonder how they even got published.   Youll never hear about those. The majority turn out to be respectable volumes that provide quality advice and useful guidance.   Then there are a few that are simply standouts.   Kellys Your Messy Brilliance is one of the latter. Tip:   Take one of those gift cards you got for Christmas and get the book.   Im pretty sure itll be one of the ones you keep on your shelf for a long time and return to often. I also had the chance to bounce some questions off Kelly last year, and youll find them in a post here.

You Need to REALLY Start Hiring - What Does That Mean Now

You Need to REALLY Start Hiring - What Does That Mean Now How to ensure your Recruiting Department keeps up Ok. Now that we covered all of the roles involved in recruiting let’s dive into a few scenarios to understand how you might want to build out your team. A great recruiting function isn’t built in a day. It usually evolves over time. So smart companies need to understand where they fall on the spectrum and plan accordingly. SCENARIO ONE: You need to make a couple of hires, not really sure of what or when. What do you need? What can you pay? How challenging of a role is it? For a small company that needs to make one to two hires, there’s no simple solution. Everyone needs to roll up their sleeves and lend a hand. First, understand what you need and what you can afford. For example, looking for a CTO/Software Engineer to build out your app, but dont have any money to pay a competitive salary? Good luck. Not impossible, but be ready to give up a bunch of equity. Be realistic. Hit up your networks. Hop on LinkedIn. Ask your board/investors for help. Get the word out. If youve got more time than money, be ready in some cases to look for three plus months. Have more money and less time?   Consider using a recruiter that specializes in whatever you need to hire. It wont be cheap (think 20 to 30 percent of starting salary), but you can see a bunch of candidates quickly. SCENARIO TWO: You can confidently say you need to hire 10 plus people over the next 6 to 12 months. Same drill, scope out the actual needs, who is going to be involved, how you are going to vet them, and who’s going to find and screen them. Are these roles that are hard to fill (sales or engineers), or will you get a solid flow of candidates through employee referrals and people applying online? The options are to do it yourself (all hands on deck), utilize search firms or potentially hire someone to do HR / Recruiting. If you go the third route, be thoughtful about what you need out of that person. The common route is to hire an HR/Recruiter or Office Support/Recruiter. That can work in the short term, but understand that all of those roles are different. Finding someone that is an expert in HR and Recruiting is nearly impossible. Even if they are, most likely they’ll want to gravitate towards one or the other over time. If the person is great at HR (but doesnt have a lot of recruiting experience), you are most likely going to have to still rely heavily on hiring managers and/or external recruiters to find candidates. If you hire a great recruiter, he or she most likely knows next to nothing about HR (and can open you up to risk around employment law, benefits, and overall compliance). And even if you hire someone, odds are he or she will need external and internal help. SCENARIO THREE: You need to hire 25 plus people over the next 6 to 12 months. Okay, now you really need a plan. At this point, youve got some options, but you need to understand what you want out of your talent acquisition function. Have you hired a bunch of people before? Are you any good at it (be honest)? If not, you need some help defining your hiring process (Strategy). You definitely need someone dedicated to recruiting, whether it’s an internal employee (internal recruiter) or an external consultant. That external consultant can be one person or an outsourced solution. SCENARIO FOUR: You need to hire 50 to 100 plus people over the next 6 to 12 months By now you should know one person cant handle this. You most likely have already started to build out your internal team, and you now have a couple of things to think about Is it working? Is this just a hiring surge, or something that will continue (or grow over the next 18 to 24 months)? If the growth feels like it isnt going to stop, you need to reevaluate your plan. Do you have the right TA/Recruiting leader in place? How is the team structured? What is your budget? You are going to spend a lot (time and money) to build something that works. You may still need to rely on external partners. You can outsource the whole thing if the hiring surge is going to end after a period of time (why build something that will go unused or need to be torn apart in a year) or if you don’t have time to build it right internally. Or you can build a great team. Hiring a Head of Recruiting (salary = 120 to 180k +), appoint one recruiter that specializes in a specific function (sales, tech, etc.) for every 20 to 30 hires you need to make. Augment those recruiters with a sourcer and/or scheduler to let them focus on pure recruiting. If you have a great team, but still need some extra bandwidth short term, consider bringing on a Contract Recruiter, Sourcer, or Coordinator to help you get over the hump (our On-Demand Recruiting offering). With all of that, you still may need to carve out some roles to give to search firms. The war for talent is that competitive. And expensive. Remember, there are no silver bullets or Swiss army knives when it comes to hiring. Recruiting is hard. It has become an arms race. If you aren’t investing significant resources towards your efforts to bring in top talent, your company is going to struggle to keep up. Develop a plan. Hire great people to execute on the plan. And bring in partners to fill in the gaps. About the author:  Matt Massucci is the founder and managing partner of Hirewell, a Chicago-based Recruiting and Talent Acquisition Solutions Provider.

Dream job opportunity Become an official chicken nugget connoisseur

I think were all guilty of at least one of these Its seems like a rigorous process and no, you wont be able to pay the rent with chicken nuggets but if this criteria fits your experience, it would be rude not to give it a go. Your love of nuggs might take you further than you think; who could forget Carter Wilkerson, whose quest for free nuggets catapulted him to worldwide Twitter fame overnight? So dont let your dreams be dreams, get to BM ASAP for the hookup. The Basics on How to Write a Resume For a New to Writing Career

The Basics on How to Write a Resume For a New to Writing CareerWhy should you be proud of your resume if you are a new to writing? You can be too ashamed of your own skills and knowledge, if you have no idea how to format a resume for the first time. A resume is like an invitation for the hiring manager to get to know you better, so that he/she can make a decision about whether to hire you or not. If you do not know how to format a resume, then you need to read this article carefully. Before writing your first draft, take out all the information that is irrelevant and delete it from your old resume. Your employer will see this information as irrelevant and therefore not interesting to him/her.Also remove any information that does not pertain to you, or does not belong to you at all. For example, if you have more than one degree from the same university, and you did not mention it, do not leave it in your resume. They will think that you have made up your mind that they are all BS.Befo re you write your first draft, get a professional resume writer. If you do not have one, you can search for a good one online. You can also hire someone who can help you write your resume for free.Since you are new to writing a resume, a professional career counselor may be able to help you learn to write a resume for the first time. The counselor can help you by giving you tips and ideas on how to format a resume to match your professional career.Once you write your first draft of a resume, do not rewrite your resume and send it to a number of companies. This can cause you trouble later on when you need to sell your resume. The reason for this is because the resume is already ready for an interview with your potential employer, so you do not need to sell it.Another good advice is that you have to keep your resume easy to read. You can use bullet points, headers, and bulleted lists to improve the readability of your resume. A good resume format has a certain flow to it, so that your reader is able to get through the resume easily.Remember that your resume should speak for itself. Most employers read the resume instead of just reading the qualifications of the candidate. Make sure that your resume will speak for itself, so that your resume will be read by the hiring manager instead of just reading your qualifications.
